Evaluate Bedding Using XSENSORS's Pressure Imaging Technology

Regulations in the sleep industry are constantly changing. Stork Materials Technology, a network of independent, accredited laboratories providing materials testing solutions to industries throughout the U.S. and Europe, specializes in anticipating and accommodating new tests as they develop. Their full-scale capabilities include core bedding tests (Cornell Evaluation, Interface Pressure Imaging, Rollator Testing, Impact Squirm, Flex Test, Buyer Specification Compliance, Failure Analysis, Standard Flammability tests, etc.) as well as new Open Flame Compliance tests.

Stork relies on state-of-the-art technology to provide accurate and reliable data to help clients improve and perfect their product and to ensure that their products pass industry regulations. XSENSOR’s pressure imaging technology provides Stork with an accessible solution to help gather body interface pressure data when testing mattresses for the commercial and medical industry.

PRESSURE IMAGING IN ACTION: THE RESULTS

SMT engineers utilize a wide range of intensive methods for evaluating bedding. One of the tests conducted is the Interface Pressure Imaging test. This test involves using live subjects to determine the body interface pressures at various locations on the mattress. SMT uses state-of-the-art XSENSOR pressure imaging technology to measure and capture important body pressure data. The values that the XSENSOR mattress system generates can be used to specifically gauge a mattress’ ability to promote or deter proper blood circulation for consumer comfort or medical applications.

XSENSOR’s pressure imaging technology is designed to accommodate a variety of applications. SMT uses an XSENSOR pressure imaging system that is designed for intensive research purposes. The software included provides additional options to analyze dynamic statistical data to aid in comprehensive research. The value in using XSENSOR’s pressure imaging system to evaluate bedding is the visual data presentation.

Stork Materials Technology (SMT) operates a fully equipped, state-of-the-art, independent bedding evaluation laboratory, serving the needs of manufacturers, designers and merchandisers of home, commercial, medical and industrial furnishings. Mattresses, box springs and other bedding products are subjected to ongoing rigorous treatment as no other home furnishings are. Realistically simulating this treatment has been a challenge to SMT’s engineers for almost 50 years. XSENSOR’s pressure imaging technology is part of SMT’s inventory of testing instruments.

Tips & Tools

Zoom-In Feature
The XSENSOR X3 COMFORT INDEX v5.0 software allows you to easily zoom-in on peak pressure areas to show customers the visual and numerical difference across various mattresses.

HOW TO:

  • Simply "right-click" with your mouse to zoom-in on any image (see screenshot below)
  • Try resizing the zoom-in box by changing the size of the colored square with your mouse

Making Sense (Glossary)

X3 COMFORT INDEX v5.0 Software

A software tool that allows the user to compare the comfort level of up to 6 mattresses.  The comfort comparison is done by analyzing the peak pressure and support area of each mattress.  The results are displayed in a bar chart that shows the comparative score of each mattress tested.

Capacitive Sensing Technology

XSENSOR Sensor Pads use this capacitance to measure pressure distribution.  In an XSENSOR system, an applied pressure distribution will compress the sensor pad and change each sensing cell capacitance by an amount related to the applied pressure.  The system then measures the change in capacitance and converts it to a pressure reading as determined by the calibration process.

Capacitive sensing technology allows the system to be constructed of very soft, supple materials.  This makes the system very thin, like a bed sheet, so the user does not feel the sensor when testing a mattress.
